OTTAWA SANDS COUNTY PARK
Ottawa Sands County Park is a 345-acre post-industrial site in Ferrysburg, Michigan, reimagined as a resilient public landscape through ecological restoration, outdoor recreation, and universal access. Located at the convergence of the Grand River and Lake Michigan, the site now anchors the Grand River Greenway, a 36-mile corridor that connects protected lands and trail systems across West Michigan. Viridis Design Group partnered with Ottawa County Parks to lead the park’s transformation, beginning with a community-driven master plan developed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The first phase of implementation, the Idema Explorer’s Campground, reflects this shared vision through native habitat restoration, innovative overnight accommodations, and fully accessible trail and water connections.

The campground redefines public camping by integrating rustic tent pads, a yurt village, and elevated treehouse structures into the park’s restored dune landscape. Each element is designed to minimize ecological disturbance while expanding opportunities for year-round recreation. Highlights include universally accessible campsites, restrooms, and a barrier-free watercraft launch that connects users to the Grand River Heritage Water Trail. The design supports a range of visitors, from traditional campers to non-motorized trail users, creating a welcoming experience for families, first-time campers, and those seeking new ways to engage with nature.
Ottawa Sands is a model for post-industrial reclamation and community-centered design. Only 8 percent of the park is designated for redevelopment, with strategic restoration of dune, prairie, and wetland systems guiding every intervention. Since opening, the campground has increased visitation and garnered strong community support. By blending ecological sensitivity, universal access, and public input, the park sets a new standard for inclusive, regional outdoor destinations in Michigan.
